Faculty Assistant (Laboratory, Behavioral Neuroscience)

The Glasper Lab, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD), is seeking a full time Faculty Assistant (i.e., Research Assistant) to join our team. This position includes performing pre-clinical research in the field of behavioral neuroscience with an emphasis on experience-dependent neuroplasticity. This position is a one-year appointment (to start on, or about, August 1, 2017) and is subject to renewal based on performance and funding.

Essential functions of the position include:

  • Performing scientific research using small rodents
  • Independently operating various laboratory equipment and apparatus used to assess animal behavior, including sociality, emotional reactivity, and cognition
  • Overseeing daily laboratory operations, including quality control and safety compliance, routine maintenance of equipment, and ordering supplies
  • Assembling and analyzing research data using various relevant computer software applications and discussing results with supervisor
  • Performing literature searches and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication
  • Contribution to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals
  • Performing other duties as assigned

A Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, chemistry or a field of study related to the research of the laboratory is required. Prior experience working in a laboratory research setting is highly preferred; however, consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities of a preferred candidate include:

  • Ability to work with laboratory animals in a research setting
  • Ability to perform immunohistochemical techniques, including preparing and working with mounted and free-floating tissue sections.
  • Ability to perform laboratory assays such as RIAs, ELISAs, and quantitative PCR
  • Ability to organize information and maintain updated records
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to learn new methods and procedures
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
